Client Story: Hosparus (Louisville, KY; New Albany, IN; Elizabethtown, KY; Bowling Green, KY)

Hosparus is the region's leading hospice care provider, serving more than 5,000 patients annually in 36 counties across Kentucky and Southern Indiana. A Joint Commission-accredited, nonprofit hospice organization, Hosparus has been providing care, comfort and counseling over 30 years.

After undergoing a significant change in staff leadership, Hosparus turned to Ashley | Rountree in 2009 for assistance to help provide campaign direction and counsel for a new capital campaign. The campaign envisions a $14.5 million effort to support renovation and construction of facilities used for staff at the headquarters in Louisville, as well as offices in New Albany (Indiana) and Elizabethtown (Kentucky). The campaign supports new programs and endowment funds, providing much-needed stability in a time of shifting health care funding dynamics. Our consultants helped provide structure and recruiting strategies for campaign volunteers and directed efforts to cultivate and secure major gifts. The campaign is currently in a quiet phase but has already secured three $500,000 gifts—the largest in the agency's history. Our consultants recently devised a comprehensive, 30-county prospect-screening program to assist Hosparus staff and board in boosting new prospects for gifts to the campaign.

Recently, Hosparus asked Ashley | Rountree to evaluate its annual giving programs and make recommendations on how to grow and sustain a new base of entry-level donors during the campaign. Using best-practice methods from peer hospices nationally, the program was redesigned to focus on gaining new support from families served by Hosparus and improving the cost-efficiency for special events, among other efforts. Later that same year, Hosparus leadership asked Ashley | Rountree to serve as interim staff, leading a staff of 18 in Advancement and Public Affairs and to direct a national search for a new Senior VP. Both the reorganization and the search were successfully concluded within 4 months.

Client Story: Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Healthcare

Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Healthcare (JHSMH) of Louisville provides health care services of world-class quality to Kentucky, Indiana and the surrounding region. The Jewish Hospital & St. Mary's Foundation serves as the primary path for philanthropic support with a mission to: educate health care givers; advance clinical research; enhance patient care; and provide access to quality health care. With roots in the community going back to 1874, JHSMH is a nonprofit organization created in 2005 when two of the region's most respected health systems – Jewish Hospital Healthcare Services and CARITAS Health Services – joined together. Jewish Hospital is a tertiary referral center that includes the internationally renown Transplant Center; Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital is a full-service hospital that is also the home to Jewish Bariatric Care; Our Lady of Peace is a psychiatric care center providing inpatient and outpatient programs; and Frazier Rehab Institute is the site of nationally recognized research and care for patients with spinal cord impairment. The merged JHSMH is a major regional health network employing nearly 7,500 in 70 health care facilities, providing over 1,400 licensed beds, more than 42,000 discharges and almost 132,000 emergency room visits annually.

In 2008, the Foundation asked consultants at Ashley | Rountree to direct an assessment and feasibility study, focused on a possible capital campaign in the range of $14 to $21 million to provide new capital and programmatic funds to support JHSMH's medical mission. This would be the first major campaign effort following the organization's merger. Simultaneous with the study, Ashley | Rountree examined opportunities for improving results within the annual giving program.

Following the successful completion of the campaign study, the Foundation asked Ashley | Rountree to assist them with pre-campaign major gifts counsel, identifying key projects and opportunities that could be matched to donors. During this period, the Foundation was fortunate to receive three significant gifts of $1 million-plus and enjoyed a record $9.5 million year in 2009.
